VetRep Apprenticeship and Jobs Program
Building on the professionalism, motivation and camaraderie of the veteran experience, our Apprenticeship and Jobs Program creates a pipeline for veterans and immediate family members to start careers in the theater. With your support, VetRep can build an ecosystem that provides:
- Professional Skill Development and Economic Opportunities: Our paid apprenticeships offer veterans hands-on experience in a wide array of theater jobs, including lighting, sound, wardrobe, props, stage management, box office, and set design under the mentorship and direction of an experienced theater professional. Our jobs program gives veterans good paying part-time work as bartenders, doormen, stagehands, facility maintenance, food runners and event staff.
- Mental Health and Wellbeing: Engaging in creative work can be therapeutic, helping veterans cope with PTS and other service-related mental health issues, fostering a sense of purpose, community and achievement.
- Leadership and Teamwork: Leveraging the leadership skills and teamwork veterans learned in the military, the program enhances theater productions and operations, leading to higher quality performances and more efficient management.
- Diversity in Theater: Veterans bring unique perspectives and stories to the theater, enriching the cultural landscape and broadening the theater’s appeal to a wider audience.
- Veteran Visibility and Cultural Exchange: Highlighting veterans’ contributions to the arts increases their visibility and challenges stereotypes, promoting a more nuanced understanding of the veteran experience. Through the arts, veterans share their experiences and viewpoints, contributing to a richer, more diverse cultural dialogue within the community and beyond.
A podcast about warriors and artists. Long-form, one-on-one conversations with veterans and immediate family members who have a foot in both the world of the artist and the world of the warrior. (5000+ downloads in 2023)
The Savage Wonder Festival of Veterans in the Arts is a multimedia festival featuring over 20 professional artists – bands, poets, artists, singers, comedians, dancers, actors and writers – who are veterans or immediate family members. A Delta Force operator who became a metal guitarist; an Iraq War veteran who became a protege of Placido Domingo; a former USMC machine gunner who founded his own award-winning dance company; these are not your typical world-class artists. The first festival brought over 4,000 people to Sugar Loaf, NY in 2022. The 2024 festival (October 11-13) will serve as the opening of VetRep’s mainstage in Beacon, NY.
